lyrics

The door was opened slowly to December
And through the scarves his face was dim and pale
The wind was still and left him only silence
He tried to smile to hide his grief but failed

The neighbours’ faces pressed against their windows
They hadn’t seen him step outside for days
He walked until the ocean stole the sunlight
Then turned around and walked back home again

He’d seen them off just three days before Christmas
“I’ll be there in a couple days,” he said
The plane was heading east to Philadelphia
But it went down in Illinois instead

He blamed himself for staying in California
And cursed the One who let his girls die
His congregation quoted Jeremiah
And left him with the guilt of wondering why

Oh what peace we often forfeit
Oh what needless pain we bear
In His arms He’ll take and shield you
And you’ll find a solace there

He told himself that death would find him ready
“There’s no one left to love before I die”
He longed to finally rest without the heartache
At last he’d find his freedom by and by
