about
There’s a town about 40 kilometres southwest of Edmonton. It’s called Devon and years ago, before they built the ring road around Edmonton, it was a shortcut on the drive from Fort St. John to Calgary.
I wrote a song about that shortcut. About those drives. About a long distance relationship. And about late being better than never.
__________
lyrics
She was driving across the country
Seemed like every other week
She could have taken every corner without eyes
And she dreamed about a day when
She’d have freedom to discover
Every one-horse town she flew through in the night
But for now she’d have to drive straight on til morning
Cause in two days she would have to drive back home
The cold kept her from sleeping
As it leaked in through the seam
She painted every shadow that she passed a ghost
As she listened to the stories
From a town she’d never been
And the places you have come to fear the most
And she called to say “I love you”
As she turned off Route 19
She said, “I just passed Devon, don’t wait up for me.”
Every evening for an hour
Conversation kept them close
But the phone has ways of wearing on a heart
And the distance grew more honest
Every mile that she drove
As she wished for him to interrupt the dark
She wished he’d call to say “I love you”
As she turned off Route 19
And his voice would mask the rumble
Of the unending concrete
But the silence was incessant
As the road behind her grew
And then finally as she passed the city limits
And the lights came into view
He said, “You’re probably long past Devon,
but I’ve been waiting up for you.”
